Grandma Rhonda's Instant Banana Cake

I never got to meet my Grandma Rhonda. Dad says that she was always the last person laughing in a room. I have an image of her being hilarious and slightly inappropriate, which I love.

She was also very stylish. That is her on the right with the fantastic pill box hat, gloves, and tres stylish brooch and little black bag. Here she is at the Pentagon in 1961 with my Grandfather on the far right. Looks important and yet she seems to be trying not to crack up laughing!

I was reading JustB's blog and saw she has a giveaway at the moment to win a KitchenAid. To enter you need to submit a recipe for your very favourite delicious treat.

It got me thinking. While I don't know a whole lot about Grandma Rhonda, Dad did pass on her excellent instant banana cake recipe. This is clearly not my baking above but a fine example lifted from Taste. I like to think that Grandma was a little bit like me in that maybe we are both secretly crap at cooking but can do a couple of things quite well...as long as they are ridiculously easy. A KitchenAid Mixer would make this recipe about 10 seconds long. Just the way I like it!

Grandma Rhonda's Instant Banana Cake

2 big bananas
3/4 cup of sugar
1 egg
1 cup SR flour

Mash/mix bananas
Add Sugar

Mix in egg then flour

Bake in a greased and floured loaf tin for 30 - 35 mins at 150c

Willow made this particular one - it didn't last long!

I am sure this little monkey, aka Dad loved it when he was little

as much as this little monkey does too.

Thank you everyone for your patience while we have been renovating our website. The good news is the website is back and better than ever, and the long awaited Pop collection of jewellery and dresses is now available online. This is one of my favourites, the Everyone's a Wintour Necklace $149 (can be worn long or doubled using the joiner clasp provided). We sent one of these necklaces to Sarah Jessica Parker when she was in Melbourne for the premiere of her latest flick, "I Don't Know How She Does It". I like to think she wears it around the house or under her winter coat when doing the school run in New York. One day I am sure the papparazzi will snap a pic of her wearing it, and then everyone will want one, so get in quick!

Christmas At My House

This was the first time I have ever hosted xmas

I felt very grown up in our new house!

I decorated the table

and the hubby got out the Stephanie Alexander cookbook

for his meat creations. There was a ham too but I forgot to take a picture of it!

There were plently of vegetables for us vegetarians too.

And a good Aussie trifle for dessert.

I only put the christmas tree up in the nick of time

just as well because there was lots of excitement handing out and unwrapping presents

What to get for the four year old that has everything? An encyclopedia of course to answer all those incessent WHY? questions!!

a pirate eye patch was a big hit too - thanks Aunty Liva!

Lara loved her squeaky giraffe, it was delicious.

I got some lovely interior design and fashion books.

I hope Santa brought you something nice and you were able to share the day with loved ones.

I love a good bargain and this dress definitely fits the bill!
It was $40 from Paperscissors in the Brisbane mall!

I wore it the other day with a boyfriend jacket, black patent belt, nude shoes and It's A Nice Day for a White Necklace

It has cute frills on the shoulders

Flats at the bus stop. I know, the glamour never ends.

I love a dress that you can mix and match accessories with and be ready in a jiffy. It also looks great with a patent orange belt (Kenji from Myer)

and the Everything's Peachy necklace.

I now have 18 minutes to get ready for work so am going to have to action another super quick oufit. Dress: 30 seconds. Necklace choice: 30 seconds. Shoes: 30 seconds. Hair: 5 minutes. Mum, Willow and I all fell in love with Leigh's designs and flare on Project Runway and were thrilled when he came along to talk about the caftans that he helped Suzanne Brooks make for the parade.

It was a pretty special moment presenting our new season Pop Collection!

Amy is wearing the Earth Stones necklace, which is Mum's design and features chunky slices of agate

Breakfast at Tiffany's got it's name because of the gorgeous light blue agate we managed to source

India rocked the pink Suzanne Brooks leopard caftan with the Everything's Peachy and the Faux Fuchsia Leo, which is back in stock!

Run, don't walk to Stone and Metal to get your mitts on them!

The Crystals are Forever necklace is perfect for when you want to wear jewellery but don't want colour to compete with your outfit - it looked amazing with the oriental print caftan.

We loved Kellie Alderman's styling for U on Sunday that we also paired the Green With Envy necklace with a long floral caftan

Everyone loved that the necklaces can do double-duty converting to a short double strand with the joiner clasp

The fuchsia caftan was screaming for the Everyone's a Wintour necklace and we even snuck in an exclusive design for Stone and Metal. Pop Collection Launch Party - Part 1

The Pop Collection officially launched at local artisan jewellery store, Stone and Metal.

Lots of lovely fashionable people came along to help us celebrate

and so many of them were wearing their 'vintage' RPE pieces from past seasons!

Nerida wore her Coco Black and Wintour necklaces

while Sam went right back to our Classic Collection and rocked the original Coco - they are very rare these days!

Kyra was wearing her favourite pink Coco

Hollie couldn't decide which one to wear so she just wore three at once!

the long black necklace also got a look in.

Gen and Salita wore Salita Matthews, but that's okay because we love her too!

There was lots of champagne to celebrate the launch

and people willing to pose for JJ O'Brien who took all these beautiful pics of course!

Laura wore the I'm Bringing Sexy Back

Wearing it Wednesday - Weddings and Engagements

Willow and I went to the engagement party of dear friends on the weekend and the dress code was wedding! Specifically wear your wedding or bridesmaids' dress to the party

So I went back to the photos of Willow's beautiful wedding day to remember how it all looked

Willow arrived by vintage car

I was there to sort her dress out

and Dad walked her down the aisle

The ceremony was outside under the trees on a glorious sunny day

Willow's dress had a sweetheart neckline, sash fixed with a vintage brooch and a cathedral length veil

It also had a hidden tulle skirt.

She looked a dream.

After the ceremony we followed the happy couple to the beachside restaurant

I wore a mushroom coloured silk number that I copied from Mrs Wang

So this is what we had to work with for the engagement party dress code!

and the bride-to-be wore.... a wedding dress! She is surrounded by her pink bridesmaids and this is later in the night after the bottom layer had already been chopped off!

Congratulations to the happy couple - the engagement party was so much fun we can't wait for the wedding!

Fashion Friday Arm Party

Leandra Medine aka 'The Man Repeller' coined the phrase 'arm party' to describe wearing lots and lots of bangles and bracelets at once.

I never thought I could pull off the 'arm party' trend because I have stick thin little girl wrists that can't support bangles.

But then I was given an adorable purple jade bracelet by my mother-in-law. It is from Singapore and inspired this arm party. Not everyone was invited but I think they all had fun.

Mum prefers a 'ring party'. We joke her fingers are like those hill tribe ladies necks and now couldn't support their own weight if she took all her rings off.

It was 'A Nice Day for a White Necklace' and an arm party.

Willow and Lara just wore stripes. Arm party poopers.

I would love to get invited to this arm party

Sequin Choices

Willow and I had a dinner party to go to at Faux Fuchsia's house. The dress code was sparkly!

I had a tough time deciding between sequins a or b but your Twitter and facebook comments were very helpful

I did try double sequins as a few people suggested

but in the end I toned it back to diamonate encrusted Milly jacket from Jean Brown with sequined shift, peony coloured Wolford tights (Jean Brown) and my YSL Divine pumps (Jean Brown). Clearly Jean Brown is the place you want to go if your dress code is 'sparkly'!

Willow went with my micro-sequin shift that I designed for my engagement party. Lara is wearing Missoni and looking adorable as per usual.

Willow paired the sequin shift with the new season Crystals Are Forever necklace (hurry if you want to snap it up in our renovation sale on facebook).

Re-organising my wardrobe this morning and I found some gold sequins stashed up the back. You can never have too many sequins. Or glamorous friends to wear them with. Thanks for the fab party FF!

Most days my long suffering BF snaps some quick outfit pics as we are running out the door to work, or sometimes even at the bus stop once he is sure we aren't going to miss it!

Other days I have to DIY and you will have to put up with the old one fat arm effect!

Yesterday I was channelling Chanel, but today I have picked Kim Kardashian! Say what you will about her but she give good accessories.

I have been lusting after this sleek looking metal belt outfit thinking only the likes of Gucci or Lanvin could provide.

That was until I found a version in Sportsgirl for $49.95!

I had zero time to get ready so I attempted Fox in Flats' 60 second Backyard Braid. I had less than 60 seconds and I can't braid but not too bad an effort I thought.

I paired my new metallic belt with my trusty Jeanwest leopard print dress and jacket, my design made in Hong Kong.

Channelling Chanel

Yesterday's oufit was inspired by the Chanel Cruise Collection party in Brisbane that Faux Fuchsia reported back from.

There were lots of elements to check off

Floaty and pastel. Check.

Black and white I nailed with our new season 'Party Like It's 1920' necklace. I snuck in a bit of colour.

Chanel-esque boucle jacket with customary bling. Check. I got this jacket at the Ladies Market in Hong Kong, which had a terrible fire go through last night. So sad.

The lithe, young wippersnapper part of Faux Fuchsia's post, maybe not so much ha ha.

Willow and I have both gone bananas for colour

and mixing high street with quality wardrobe pieces.

Willow's top was a steal from that SES shop!

The orange knit looks fabulous next to the new season Match My Missoni necklace and Lara's little toes

Judd got the colour memo rocking a frog green singlet with shades of plaid.

We have also gone crazy for iphones. I don't have one yet but boy am I jumping on the bandwagon.

Willow took this pic on her iphone. I am wearing a $12 maxi skirt from SES! We did independant trips to the same store on the same day. We do stuff like that. It's a twin thing. I paired the stripes with a Bonds t-shirt, Yanvan bracelet from the hubby and the new season Crystals are Forever necklace.

Lovefox Launch Party

Last week Willow and I went along to the Lovefox launch party at Stone and Metal

Lovefox is a new online boutique set up by local lass Meaghan Chant (on the right). On the left is the gorgeous owner of Stone and Metal, Sam.

The party included a fun fashion parade showcasing some of the labels available on Lovefox as well as the stunning jewellery available at Stone and Metal

Red Phoenix was part of the action with this festival look featuring our new Constellation bracelets

This look featured local label Salita Matthews

The Lovefox boutique stocks labels such as We are Handsome, StyleStalker, Evil Twin and Talulah

I think it is wonderful to see a local girl set up a professional online boutique and support local and emerging designers!

There was plently of gorgeous handmade jewellery to drool over of course

The PR super talent that is Laura Brice was there. Couldn't stop me from having a double chin though Laura ha ha.

We did the dork thing and stood in front of the cabinet displaying our Red Phoenix Emporium jewellery! Squint and you can see it in the back!

We had another celebrity spotting of a Red Phoenix necklace this week

I got an excited call from my bf swearing the ACA reporter was wearing one of necklaces! And she was! ACA reporter Laura Tunstall snapped up the Limoncello necklace in our sample sale.

I am so excited she decided to wear it on TV! Our necklaces just love the attention.

The story was investigating a magical diet spray. If only.

However, if we are talking magical weight loss then you can't go past a long necklace to make you look thinner! It is the length and colour that draws the eye up and down in an illusion. It's why I am never seen without one! I am calling it the 'necklace (couldn't be assed to exercise) diet' - try it!

Lotus' Engagement Party Special Edition

Last week was a very special occasion

Our engagement party!

We had it at our favourite little bar with lots of tapas and boutique drinkies

Originally it was going to be a grown up event but Judd can read now and was very upset when he saw his name wasn't on the invitation. He then wrote it on himself and I am glad he did - it wouldn't have been the same without him!

There were so many lovely people there

I spent the whole night talking!

and don't worry Lara didn't miss out either

my bestie Olivia is going to be a bridesmaid

as well as Willow and my lovely sister-in-law to be

that's my brother-in-law to be!

I wore a custom Red Phoenix Emporium silver sequin shift that I designed with my YSL Divine pumps. I went sans necklace as it was all about the ring baby!

There was so much talking and laughing

and feeling special!

But all too soon it was time to go home!

I love a good structured excuse to accessorise and Melbourne Cup is the only day of the year you can safely wear a fascinator to work so I run with it!

Luckily, while I have been busy doing unglamorous things Willow has taken the fashion torch and run with it

Willow recently hung out with Aunty Gok at Westfield shopping centre

There was lots of talk of bangers and gay boys

The ever gorgeous Christie Nicolaides was the host

Gok’s pant’s seemed to be held in place as if by magic?

Willow said she felt just like Victoria Beckham taking baby Harper to the fashion shows in NY

She even sat with the fashion editor of the Courier Mail, the lovely Laura, and got her to hold her little Lara in the “Frow” reserved for media.

Willow reports that she sat between fashion royalty Laura Stead and Nikki Parkinson of Styling You. Nikki was wearing a fab necklace by a local designer we love - Salita Matthews.

Gok made sure their bangers looked amazing.

Then she had to dash from the frow without meeting Gok to go get Judd from daycare for his big interview at kindy. Who says Mummys can't be glamorous!

Highs and Lows

It has been a few weeks of highs and lows with not much fashion inbetween.

The bfs family tree sadly lost a 102 year old matriarch.

My dear friend had a baby and then heartbreakingly her sister lost her battle with Leukemia. You couldn't write a sadder story.

The bf and I also bought a house. Don't ask me why, but a thirty day settlement sounded like a good idea at the time so our days have been filled with contracts, bank appointments, etc. I can't wait to show you pics when we move in!

I did go to a great fashion parade last week so must report on that shortly.

Lazy Colour Blocking

There is a bit of a theme developing here around my need for lazy outfits. Is anyone else finding the general routine super hectic right now? What I need in my wardrobe are pieces that are easy to grab, combine and are going to do all the work (especially if I don't have time for blowdrying etc).

Colour blocking is proving to be fun and easy - grab two bright things and wear them together! Top from Ally (does that shop even still exist?), Miss Shop cardi, Prada glasses, pencil skirt my own design.

No, I didn't do my hair.

With all this colour blocking going on sometimes you need your necklace to just shush up a little. Our new season Crystal are Forever necklace is statement without clashing with your outfits! Coming soon!

A Tribute to The Tribune

Sadly The Tribune Brisbane is closing its doors this week.

Red Phoenix Emporium can't thank The Tribune enough for providing us with such an amazing, stylish platform for our pieces as local emerging designers.

We cut our teeth at The Tribune and I wanted to go back to the start with a tribute to The Tribune Brisbane....

Our first collection at The Tribune was barely a 'collection' rather a small assembly of classic black and white necklaces. Our signature piece was the Coco necklace.

It also included the White Jewels and Black Jewels necklaces. The collection sold out at The Tribune! We couldn't believe it and it gave us the courage to design and launch a full Spring/Summer 2010-11 Collection.

In August 2010 we celebrated the launch of our 'Leo Collection' at The Tribune with champagne and our special guest Faux Fuchsia, who collaborated on the Leo necklace design. You can read the full post about our launch here.

The Faux Fuchsia Leo necklace features a 'visionary' combination of crystal cubes, pearls and faceted fuchsia agate.

Our Leo Collection also included our Coloured Coco necklaces in navy, fuchsia, white, lemon and purple. So fun and bright!

We were enjoying the Summer so much we also released a high Summer 'Global Tribe' Collection

The Tribune has helped so many emerging designers get exposure in an industry that is notoriously hard to break into

there were a few stars in the making at the QUT graduate parade this year, which Tribune always supported.

Lazy Outfit

I am having a super lazy outfit day.

I fight constantly with my curly hair and some days it just gets tied back out of the way.

Am wearing Cotton On cardi, vintage top and belt and Witchery jeans.

I love a good accessory when I am feeling lazy and this new season Red Phoenix Emporium necklace is the perfect fix. It features four strands of white agate, crystal and mother of pearl so you can look like a slob and it does all the jzooshing for you! Genius (coming soon!).

Last Friday Night

Last Friday Red Phoenix Style was a guest at the Panache Inner Circle 'All to Do with Style' event at the Sofitel.

My dinner dates were the very talented Jennifer Gifford (of Jennifer Gifford Designs)

and Sandra Kane (of Sandra Darling visual art creations), who together make amazing clothing like this new season shift dress

and these fabulous printed pieces

the event was very smoothly run and I have to give top marks to the Sofitel for catering for vegetarians no questions asked!

Happy face at my vegetarian meal and due to the wine sponsors Seppeltsfield and Dutschke never, ever letting my glass get close to empty

and then it was time for some semi-naked male models, yes please, thanks to Daniel Alexander Couture

The adorable Laura Stead of the Courier Mail hosted the evening

and there was lots of time to network with other fabulous people like our stylish friend Hollie who did us proud layering her Long Black Red Phoenix necklace with a new season piece she bought off the plans!

We chatted with other creative types at our table including Vanja Stance of the popular Fashion Darling! blog

but there was less chatting and more eating when the desserts came - a heavenly combo of strawberry tasting stuff in a cup and chocolate tasting stuff on the side. I never said I was a food blogger.

Then it was time for the palate cleanser. More semi-naked male models. Nice ah, shorts.

and of course an array of fabulous frocks that my little, itty bitty camera just couldn't do justice do but close your eyes and picture sequins, chiffon and silk or check out Daniel Alexander's collections here.

Fashion Friday - Colour, Chunk and Chains

With the weather warming up I am trying out a new look for my accessories

I really like the idea of layering my solid gemstone necklaces with lighter chains and textured materials

I love the contrast of the delicate chain and the chunky stones - so devil may care!

Olivia Palermo knows how to mix her lengths and colours like a pro!

Jennifer Anniston and Kelly Ripa have got the chain part down pat but I think they could use a little more colour pop

I mixed my Chanel chain with our new season 'Berry Prada' necklace (available online soon!)

Why does my front look like my back? Not sure, but showing the celebs how to roll accessories-wise.

Even our stylish friend Hollie is one up on those celebs cleverly layering the Little Windows with a sample design we gave her. We didn't even teach her that, she just rocked up for lunch on the same Jedi-accessories-mind level. Spooky.

Monday Outfit Post

Quick Monday outfit post. I am wearing jeans, which in my books don't count as pants due to the magical slimming and shaping properties of denim.

I paired my Forever New jeans with Bloch flats and stripy top from Zara. On a cost per wear basis the top is doing pretty well. I have to say that they weren't giving away the clothes at Zara. However I am a fan of the 100% polyester/acrylic-something combo. In my old age and laziness I DO NOT IRON. EVER. Hence my love of fabrics that wouldn't crease in an atomic event. Try it, it is very liberating.

Jacket if from Portmans. Needs to be dry cleaned but I am holding out for the warmer weather..... helllloooo Sunshine State?

I forgot to tell you all about the lovely birthday dinner for our fellow Leo Faux Fuchsia

In the spirit of Faux Fuchsia we also concealed our identities!

FF wore fabulous beaded, sparkly things of course

Willow wore what can only be described as a sequined poncho. It was mah-jor. She accessorised briefly with Faux Fuchsia's trustly YSL clutch.

I wore a frock from our new season collection (coming in September!), a jacket from the op shop and the Metallico necklace. I get so much wear out of that necklace - it goes with everything!

It has been an exciting week

There was a bit of waiting

and we got our cameras all ready to go

and then she was here

and our hearts all expanded a little more to fit her in

all 7lbs and 6oz.

What Willow is Wearing - Bump Update

You are probably wondering what Willow is looking like lately.

In her own words, the answer is 'huge'.

She is still looking beautifully stylish though, layering a French Connection dress with a vintage red silk maxi dress.

and accessorising with one of our *oops* new season necklaces. We LOVE the new season so much that we can't stop wearing it, even though we are supposed to officially wait until we release it in September for Spring/Summer 2011-12.

This season will also include our special collaborations with Sydney Shop Girl

and Faux Fuchsia!

Willow has also been nesting. Here is the baby's nook - too cute! It is only FOUR days until this little baby arrives and melts our hearts all over again.

Wearing Red for Daniel

I am wearing red today to show support for the Morcombe family. The family have asked that we all wear red to remember Daniel who tragically disappeared in 2003. Anyone who followed the story of his disappearance has been sickened by the stories unfolding. Styling You, a blogger from the Sunshine Coast where the Morcombes live, wrote a moving entry about the story here.

I started with a red scarf.

But it didn't seem enough

So I added some red lippie too.

Our thoughts are with the Morcombe family today as they try and get some heartbreaking closure.

The Faux Fuchsia Leo necklace turned 1 year old this week.

I know, so exciting!

The Faux Fuchsia Leo necklace was dreamed up over a champagne with our style icon Faux Fuchsia of course.

There was lots of 'visionary' talk and discussions related to chunk, shine and whatsies.

The end result incorporates fuchsia faceted agate, baroque pearls and crystal cubes. You all know it does double duty and can be worn long or short.

We are so proud of our little FF Leo

and get all misty eyed when stylish people like Sydney Shop Girl wear it

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

I have been thinking about this wedding thing a bit and I must admit I have absolutely no idea where to start. The sheer scale of the planning required is enormous. So I have decided I will plan it one decision at a time, and when I have run out of decisions then it must be time to get married.

The first decision that is coming to mind is naturally the honeymoon! Legitimate excuse to go on a rad holiday! I travelled around Greece about five years ago on my lonesome and loved it

Ever since I took this picture I have been dreaming of going back for a honeymoon, doesn't it just scream romance!

Plus the food is spectacular

Everything has an air of joy and relaxation

there are lots of beautiful white and blue things

and sand to put your toes in.

Although I think I might upgrade from my last trip backpacking!

I will definitely pack my White Jewels necklace again tho!

I recently attended a gangster/flapper themed birthday party

I took inspiration from the Dior Fall 2009 runway show and did my hair in fake finger curls with on overkill of bobby pins

The dress is an old Marc Jacobs covered in beautiful rectangular flappy bits

I wore the Lady Melbourne necklace with a couple of other randoms stacked on

Silk Road in Hong Kong

Mum recently jetted off to Hong Kong again to visit her sister and find more treasures for Red Phoenix Emporium

I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for Ice Cream!

I nearly forgot to tell you all about the great Ice Cream frenzy of 2011.

It started with a rumour around the office that there was free Ben & Jerry's ice cream in King George Square! A bit of research confirmed that for a gold coin donation you could basically get as much ice cream as you could carry!

I didn't have to ask a pregnant lady twice to go get free ice cream, so Willow and I high-tailed it to the square. We weren't the only ones with the same idea and it looked like a Zara opening.

But we persevered and came back after work. Only because the money was going to charity tho... not because we had been thinking about ice cream ALL day

I love the Ben & Jerry's Strawberry Cheesecake, I developed a penchant for it when I lived in London and my bursting jeans were glad they didn't yet stock it in Oz on my return.

The really cool thing about the event was that all the money raised was donated to

OzHarvest who are a non-denominational charity that rescues excess food which would otherwise be discarded. I think this is a hugely worthy cause and I was glad Ben & Jerry's brought this charity to my attention.

Good deed for the day ticked off I BYOed a spoon and the pregnant lady and I got to work asap!

Fashion Friday: Blink and Miss the Bump

It is Willow's last day of work today before maternity leave.

She has looked so stylish throughout this pregnancy. Here she is accessorising with a little zebra I bought for the baby.

I can't believe that in about four weeks we will get to meet the little one. I am so excited but I think I am going to miss the bump fashions as well.

In the meantime the bump is continuing its stylish ways in our new season Spring/Summer 2011-12 shift dress and necklaces (coming September 2011!!).
